Letter from teacher
Welcome
Mrs. H's 5th Grade!
Welcome to 5th Grade!
Wow! What a great start to the year. Our expedition is officially underway and it is so exciting. Be sure to ask your students about our journey to a sunken ship.
A Little Bit About Mrs. H!
I moved to Colorado in 1996 and began working for a company called Science Adventures for Kids. With Science Adventures I taught K-6 students hands on science through summer camps, after-school enrichment programs, classroom visits, and school-wide assembly presentations. My time with Science Adventures taught me the value of having students "get their hands dirty". I believe that the most authentic learning takes place when students dig in and experiment with concepts. I try to apply this theory to all subject areas, so don't be surprised if your student's math homework has them crawling around the house to measure the perimeter of a room!
After working for Science Adventures I moved to Borders Books and Music as the Children's Section Leader. My time at Borders was invaluable. While there I experienced so many different aspects of children's literature. I bring with me a life-long love of reading, as well as an extensive knowledge of what is available and engaging for kids. I hope to pass on my love of reading to every one of my students.
In 2000 my husband and I were blessed with our first child, Ryan. Soon after, in 2002, came our second, Benjamin. I returned to school after Benjamin came along and finished my bachelor's degree in biology at UCCS. This is my third year at PPSEL.
I am so happy that I have found the wonderful people at PPSEL. After meeting all of the staff I told Mr. Knapp that it felt like I was coming home! I consider myself blessed to have found a group of people who share my desire to educate students in a way that is engaging and complete.
I hope that you are as excited about this school year as I am. I am always available to my students and parents. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments please feel free to contact me. I can be reached at emily.heinrich@ppsel.org.

Class Information
We are going to be getting down and dirty this year! I believe that sometimes the best way to learn is to by getting MESSY!
What this means is that students will be DOING a lot. They will be creating, experimenting, designing, and revising each and every day.
I have very strong beliefs about homework. Students will have homework assignments, and the amount will vary. However, homework will be used as a tool to reinforce the work that we are doing in class. It will NEVER be busy work!
I encourage students to read as much as possible. In addition to the reading that we do as part of our literacy block, I ask that students read for 20 minutes at home each night.
In addition to the curriculum that I teach, part of my job as a 5th grade teacher is to prepare students for middle school. We will be working on organization, study skills, and responsibility throughout the year.
