Dear PPSEL School Community,

Welcome to Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning!

Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning is a Falcon School District 49 charter school that was granted a charter as an Expeditionary Learning school. Expeditionary Learning (EL) is a model for schools that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. EL is inquiry-based and learning is geared to authentic products that demonstrate that learning. Learning expeditions are units of in-depth study that are designed specifically for each class to maximize understanding and growth. Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning (PPSEL) is in its fifth year as a school. The school has been putting in the effort to make strides in each year of our existence.

Most of our content is taught through our Learning Expeditions.  Subjects are integrated so that students have a well-rounded, deep understanding of content.  Our Math curriculum consists of Saxon math, Investigations, and Connected Math.  The curriculum is meant to teach math on a conceptual level rather than just rote skills. Students are taught to explain their math thinking, which is something that is asked for on the Colorado State Assessments as well.

State assessments are only one way PPSEL measures the progress of our students. PPSEL is also using NWEA MAPS testing three times a year in order to have a good gauge of how students are progressing. We test our primary students using the DIBELS testing for even more data. Students take the COGAT and ITBS tests as well. We feel that with these assessments and many other pieces of data that are collected throughout the year that we have a good gauge of where are students are. This data allows us to make educational decisions that best fits the needs of each individual student.

We exist as a school to help facilitate the learning of all students. We hold ourselves to a high standard as a staff, and we expect our families to hold that same high regard for education. PPSEL is committed to helping each child strive for their potential as a student and as a person. We take our role seriously and wholeheartedly take on the challenge of helping to educate each child in the school.

Sincerely,
Don Knapp
